  弗劳伦斯·弗洛伦斯·南丁格尔(1820年5月12日—1910年8月13日),生于意大利中部历史名城佛罗伦萨的一个富有移民家庭,后来随家迁居英国。幼小时就勤奋好学,遍览各种经典名著。曾就读于法国巴黎大学,操英、法、意、德诸国语言。她的父母希望她发展文学、音乐才能,跻身名流社会,而她对此兴致淡薄。她在日记中写道:“摆在我面前的道路有三条:一是成为文学家;二是结婚当主妇;三是当护士。”她不顾父母的反对而毅然选择了第三条道路。
