How To Grab Attention With Your Cover Letter

In the current economy where employment is getting hard to find, company recruiters can get hundreds or even thousands of job applications for a single position. When this happens, hiring managers and recruiters can spend no more than a few seconds for each resume. They often scan the cover letter and, if they do not find anything interesting, move on to the next person. As a job seeker, this means that you have only a few seconds to capture the recruiter’s attention and get closer to the job you want.

Now, this can be quite a predicament because your cover letter has to conform to a specific pattern but still be different enough to capture the attention of a reader. One way to satisfy both requirements is to add a personal branding element to your cover letter. These elements are optional, but they can be just the right addition to make a cover letter stand out from the rest.

  A Slogan

The slogan is a small phrase or sentence which is placed in the far left margin directly under your name at the top of the cover letter. Alternatively, it can also be placed at the bottom of the letter in italics. The slogan should be indicative of the value you can bring to a company. If you find it difficult to make a slogan, you can go through the job posting or the company website for some ideas. The slogan would vary as per the type of job you are applying for. For example, elementary school teacher positions can have the slogan ‘Helping young students to their bright future”. A cover letter for a sales manager position can have the slogan ‘Overcoming challenges and obstacles toward better sales’.

  A Testimonial

The next element you can include in your cover letter is a testimonial. This small paragraph should state others’ views on your performance. A testimonial can include experts of a thank you letter from a customer, a letter of recommendation, staff memo, internship summary, performance evaluation, or vendor satisfaction letter. However, you should not fabricate any testimonial that you have not received.

  A Mission Statement

The third and last element that can capture a recruiter’s attention is a mission statement. This statement has to be short and concise. It should clearly state your mission and your career goal. Other optional additions to the statement may include something you have done or plan to do, the reason for your belief, and passion for your profession. Alternatively, you can also write about what you think you can bring to the company.

Let’s go back to the previous examples of a cover letter for a school teacher and sales manager position to understand the contents of a mission statement. A cover letter for a school teacher can have the following mission statement- ‘Every step and action taken by a child will affect his or her future. My mission is to help make these children take positive steps and create a fun and inspiring learning session for them.’ A cover letter for a sales manager may have the following mission statement- ‘My mission is not just to improve sales, but to also bring more convenience in a customer’s life. I believe in a win-win situation where the company and the customer benefit from the sale.’
